As is the case with many countries, China is home to more than one airline company that operates both domestic and international flights. The two main airlines in the Republic of China are EVA Air owned by the EVA Airways Corporation, and China airlines which is the country’s flag carrier airline.

EVA is based officially at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport which is located close to Taipei in Taiwan. Despite this, the company is in fact headquartered in Lujhu in Taoyuan Country. The airline operates both dedicated cargo service flights and commercial passenger flights to more than forty destinations internationally. The company services its flights to destinations around the globe throughout the rest of Asia, as well as in North America, Europe, and Australia. EVA Air is mostly owned by private investors, and it operates acorss a route network that is fully international. After its rival company China Airlines, EVA is the second largest airline in the Republic of China.

The airline was founded in 1989 and initially operated as an affiliate company to the large conglomerate shipping organisation, the Evergreen Group. Since then, the company has expanded to offer a multitude of services including airline catering, ground handling and air cargo distribution services as well as aeronautical engineering services. The cargo services operated by the company are linked with the Evergreen shipping network which itself operates on both land and sea. The cargo division of the airline operates under the official name of EVA Air Cargo.

The company also has a regional subsidiary which handles most of the company’s domestic flights which operates under the name of UNI Air and is based in the city of Kaohsiung, Taiwan. This division of the company focuses mostly on short and medium haul flight routes.

The company is able to provide such a diverse range of services due mostly to its use of an equally diverse fleet made up of various different aircraft models. The airline primarily uses a mixture of McDonnell Douglas jets, Airbus jets and Boeing jets. The commercial passenger flights are primarily carried out by the use of Boeing 747 airliners, Boeing 777 airliners, and Airbus A330 models, whereas the cargo routes are operated by freighter aircraft, specifically, Boeing 747 and MD11 jet models.

The company has gained recognition for its pioneering spirit, being one of the first airlines in the world to introduce ‘premium economy class’ travel for its commercial passengers. This service was introduced in 1991 and is still a staple part of the company’s revenue.
