Southwest Airlines – built from the ground up
Every year air travel becomes more convenient, accessible and affordable to the general public. Not surprisingly there are a large number of airlines that cater to the budget air fare market offering cheap international flights and even cheaper domestic flights across the United States. One such company that generates its main revenue by catering to members of the public in need of affordable air travel is Southwest Airlines.
The low-cost airline is headquartered in the South American state of Texas in the city of Dallas at the Dallas Love Field in a part of the city known as ‘the Love Field’. In regards to the amount of domestic passenger traffic that the company caters for, Southwest Airlines is technically the biggest airline in all of the United States. The company has enjoyed this prestigious record since the 30th of June in 2010.
The airline operates over 3,400 flights every day. This is achieved by the large amount of aircraft that the airline has in its possession; following the purchase of more planes in March 2011, the company now operates with a fleet consisting of five hundred and fifty-two aircraft.
The company has a proud history owing to the fact that the airline has been built from the ground up. The company moved to its present headquarters during 1990. Back then, the headquarters was approximately two hundred and fifty-six thousand square feet in area; enough to house the six hundred and fifty or so employees that worked there at the time. The new headquarters facilities were built and the site was developed during the 1990 move, incurring a cost of over fifteen million dollars. This was further developed upon in the first quarter of 1995, when an extra sixty thousand square feet of floor space was added onto the buildings. Once again in 1996, the office was extended even further with and additional three hundred thousand square feet of floor space to accommodate the one thousand, four hundred employees as well as new ones that the company had at the time. This whole process cost Southwest Airlines a further three hundred thousand dollars.
It is clear from the development history of the company that the airline is no stranger to spending large amounts of money to get the job done. It is this strong business strategy of spending big to earn big that has secured the airline the high ranking that it has today.
